Massage Therapy

Here at our office in Gaithersburg Maryland massage therapy is one of the more popular treatments for relaxation and stress reduction.

You may have noticed the increase in the use of therapeutic massage as an important and valuable means of treating many of the physical ailments people are suffering from today. While some may get massages only because it is relaxing, there are actually specific reasons why massage is generally beneficial to your health.

Massage encourages the feeding and development of the muscular system by stimulating its circulation and cell activity. A full-bodymassage causes the muscles to become both firmer and

more elastic, while muscles too weak to be used voluntarily can be strengthened by a massage treatment. Massage is also an effective means of relaxing tense muscles and releasing muscle spasms.The supply of blood to the muscles is proportionate to their activity. It is estimated that blood passes three times faster through muscles being massaged than through muscles at rest. Particular massage movements create a pumping action that forces the venous blood and lymph onward, and brings a fresh supply of blood to the muscles. Massage aids in the removal of metabolic waste products and helps nourish surrounding tissues.Muscle tissue that has been injured heals more quickly, and with less scarring and adhesions when massage is applied regularly. Massage can have a positive effect on the range of motion of limbs that had previously been constrained by tissue injury, inflammation, muscle tension, or strain.

We offer various forms of massage here at our Gaithersburg wellness center including therapeutic, deep tissue, neuromuscular, and cranial sacral. Check our list of services for other related treatments such as shiatsu, raindrop technique (aromatherapy) and reflexology.

Shiatsu

The actual Japanese meaning of the word Shiatsu is “finger pressure”. Shiatsu is a method of using finger pressure on the body’s meridian lines and acupressure points to affect and balance the energy flow. This energy is called Ki in Japanese, Chi in Chinese, and Prana in India. It has been called “subtle energy”, “Orgone energy”, and “life energy” in the West.

According to Oliver Cowmeadow in his book, The Art of Shiatsu, there is an energetic definition of health:

  • Having an approximately even distribution of Energy in all the Meridians…the amount of energy in all parts of the body is balanced.
  • Energy is flowing, rather than being blocked or trapped. Life is Energy in movement.
  • Having a strong flow of Energy. The more Energy we have within us, the greater our physical vitality and stamina, mental positivity and clarity, and the wider and deeper our consciousness.

Shiatsu applies pressure to acupressure points with the aim of:

  • preventing and curing illness by stimulating the body’s natural recouperative powers;
  • eliminating toxins;
  • promoting general good health.

Shiatsu is a specialized system of touching to effect healing. Shiatsu is received while wearing light-weight clothing. Each person has a different reaction to the treatment. If you have low energy, the treatment may give you increased alertness. If you are tense or stressed, it can help you come to a point of balance and relaxation.

Benefits

Shiatsu has shown positive results with:

  • back pain (including sciatica);
  • headaches and/or migraines;
  • general aches, pains, or chronic tension;
  • insomnia;
  • menstrual pain or irregularity;
  • low libido or vitality; and
  • negative moods, like depression, anxiety, or worry.

A shiatsu session lasts an hour. We recommend that recipients avoid eating 60-90 minutes before the treatment.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity (such as athletes), and patients who have sustained physical injury. It is not uncommon for receivers of deep tissue massage to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two.

Deep tissue work varies greatly. The term “deep tissue” is often misused to identify a massage that is performed with sustained deep pressure. Deep tissue massage is a separate category of massage therapy, used to treat particular muscular-skeletal disorders and complaints and employs a dedicated set of techniques and strokes to achieve a measure of relief.

It should not be confused with “deep pressure” massage, which is one that is performed with sustained strong, occasionally intense pressure throughout an entire full-body session, and that is not performed to address a specific complaint. Deep tissue massage is applied to both the superficial and deep layers of muscles, fascia, and other structures. The sessions are often quite intense as a result of the deliberate, focused work. When a client asks for a massage and uses the term “deep tissue”, more often than not he or she is seeking to receive a full-body session with sustained deep pressure throughout. All of our therapists are trained and capable of performing deep tissue, however most massage therapy sessions would include a mixture of swedish and deep tissue depending on what they are sensing that the body needs in a specific area. If a practitioner employs deep tissue techniques on the entire body in one session, it might lead to localized muscle and nerve trauma, thereby rendering the session counterproductive.

Raindrop Technique

“Raindrop Technique” is best described as an aromatherapy massage as it involves the application of about 10 specific essential oils.

The oils are dropped directly onto the spine from about six inches above the body. The oils are then worked into the spine using light finger strokes, stimulating energy impulses, and dispersing the oils along the nervous system throughout the entire body.

This helps bring the body into balance and the energy centers can be cleared and re-aligned. Aromatherapy massage will also help to reduce spinal inflammations and kill viruses that hibernate along the spinal column. By stimulating the central nervous system, you affect every system in the body, including emotional release and support.

Even though the oils continue to work in the body for a week, one applications may last months – or it may be necessary to repeat the application every week until the body begins to respond. A session takes approximately one hour.The process makes use of Young Living oils – specifically the set is referred to as the Raindrop Kit.

Craniosacral Massage

Craniosacral massage therapy is a holistic healing practice that uses very light touching to balance the craniosacral system in the body, which includes the bones, nerves, fluids, and connective tissues of the cranium and spinal area.

This modality is based on the concept that a natural rhythm is created in each of us by the ebb and flow of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord.

Trained practitioner works with this rhythmic flow by applying gentle pressure on and around the head and neck. Headaches, earaches, blockages and sinus problems may be relieved by this therapy.From 1975 to 1983, after extensive research and observations of cranial activity, physician John E. Upledger pioneered and developed craniosacral therapies and procedures.

His procedure includes using a soft touch, about the weight of a nickel (5 grams), a practitioner will release restriction in the craniosacral system to improve the flow and activity of the central nervous system stemming from the brain. Cranio-Sacral therapy is used as a preventative health measure against diseases and a wide range of medical discomforts associated with pain and dysfunction. Some of which include migraine headaches, chronic neck and back pain, motor-coordination impairments, colic, autism, central nervous system disorders, orthopedic problems, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, scoliosis, chronic fatigue, and stress and tension-related problems.Judy LeGrand is our certified craniosacral massage therapist.

Hot Stone Massage

Heated or hot stone massage is a type of treatment that uses warmed stones to relax muscles and induce a calming state of mind.

Intended to be extremely relaxing, a heated stone massage involves the placement of sanitized, warmed, smooth rocks (usually basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat) upon different parts of the body.

Typically, the treatment is done in conjunction with traditional massage techniques, such as Swedish massage, and the stones may be used with applied pressure by the massage therapist during the treatment.Often, stones also are placed–and left for a period of time–on certain body parts such as the spine, hands or belly, and replaced once they cool.

Cool stones may also be used to address muscle injury. There is generally a $10-15 additional charge for hot stones depending on the length of the massage session. For a one hour hot stone the cost is $115. For our 90-minute combination hot stone and raindrop technique (called Rocks and Raindrop) is $155.We have multiple massage therapists trained in hot stone massage.

Tui-Na

Tui-Na is a manual therapy used in traditional Chinese medicine; based on the principles of yin-yang, the five elements, and a meridian view of the body. The goal is to encourage free flow of qi by manipulating the joints, viscera, and soft tissue.

Tui-Na is a medical method using the arms, hands, fingers, elbows and knees as tools for treating diseases and illnesses.

Tui-Na is also used to protect health and build up body immunity, so that disease can be stopped in its beginning acting as a preventative medical measure, without any side effects. Tui-Na can sometimes be mistaken for acupressure.

Tui-Na uses techniques and manipulations to stimulate acupuncture points or other parts of the body surface so as to correct physiological imbalances of the body and achieve curative effects.The effect of Tui-Na is to disperse and smooth obstructions whilst checking and restraining hyperfunction. Tui-Na is an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which also encompasses acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition and exercise to treat the whole body, mind and spirit.For soft tissue injuries, Tui-Na relaxes muscles and tendons and promotes smooth passage of the channels. It also promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis.

Judy LeGrand is our one therapist certified in this modality.

What does the Bellanina Facelift Massage Include?

Bellanina Facelift Massage consists of a thorough cleansing with a pure, wholesome facial cleanser and warm towels to soften the skin. This process cleans cellular debris and prepares the skin for massage. Before we begin the face massage, starting at the feet, we use Thai massage techniques to open the energetic flow and help the body to relax. Passive joint movement creates a gentle rocking to help the tension in the hips and legs start to release. Stretching and massage to the arms, wrists and shoulders create a further release of tension and thus, greater relaxation. Once the neck and shoulders are loosened we wrap the hair and we are then, ready to begin.

A full thirty minutes is devoted to massaging your face with luxurious aromatherapeutic oils and our signature invigorating Honeylift Massage lotion. Warmed towels soothe the tension lines from your face. Using whipping, tapping, acupressure and contouring strokes as well as manual lymph drainage, blood and oxygen is stimulated to nourish, rejuvenate and tone the muscles and skin of the face. After hot towels soothe your feet, your hands and feet are then massaged while you relax during the “tie-up” step.

The face is moisturized with crèmes containing the finest natural bio-extracts to feed and nourish the skin. At the completion of your Facelift Massage treatment, your scalp is massaged and your back is cleansed with a hot towel.
